What’s the best age for my child to see an orthodontist?
While orthodontic evaluations can start by age 7 (as recommended by the American Association of Orthodontists), there’s no bad time to visit. An early check-up allows us to spot any developmental issues and guide the growth of your child’s jaw and teeth. That said, many kids don’t start braces until around age 11-13 once most adult teeth are in. We also offer observations for younger children. If your child isn’t ready for treatment, we’ll monitor their growth at periodic visits (often free of charge) until the timing is right. Remember, orthodontic treatment isn’t just for kids and teens; about one in every five of our patients is an adult. So whether you’re considering treatment for your child or yourself, the best age to see an orthodontist is really any age if you have a concern about your smile or bite.
Do braces or Invisalign hurt?
Generally, braces and Invisalign do not “hurt”, but you can expect some soreness or discomfort, especially in the first few days after they’re applied or after an adjustment. With braces, your teeth, gums, and cheeks need a short time to get used to the brackets and wires. We usually recommend soft foods and maybe a pinch of orthodontic wax on any pokey parts for a couple of days. Invisalign aligners are smooth plastic and tend to cause less irritation on cheeks and lips. However, each time you switch to a new set of aligners, your teeth might feel achy for a day or two as they begin to move. The good news is any discomfort means the treatment is working, and it subsides quickly. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help if needed, but most patients adjust fast and find the experience very tolerable. Our team will give you tips to manage soreness and make your treatment as comfortable as possible.

This is a great time to ask any questions – whether about different types of braces, how Invisalign works, or anything you’re curious or concerned about.
