What Orthodontists Do

Q:

Do orthodontists do surgery?

A:

No. Orthodontists usually align the teeth, and then if surgery is needed, it is usually performed by a surgical specialist like oral surgeons.

Q:

Do orthodontists clean teeth?

A:

Some orthodontists have services for having the teeth cleaned around the braces. At Brace Central Orthodontics, we have hygienists who work with the orthodontist to clean the teeth and help patients with oral hygiene instructions. However, it should not replace regular dental checkups because usually, the cleaning at the orthodontist is a light cleaning. The debridement is performed only around the appliances, and then patients should still see their dentist at least every six months for a deeper cleaning and evaluation for any other treatment that’s necessary.

Q:

Do orthodontists polish teeth?

A:

No. Teeth are usually polished before and after the placement of the appliances.

Q:

Can orthodontists clean plaque?

A:

Orthodontists should help patients clean plaque and explain all good oral hygiene techniques to make sure that the braces stay nice and clean and prevent any problems during the treatment. At Brace Central Orthodontics, we make sure that patients maintain good oral hygiene and keep their appliances clean.

Q:

Do dentists pull wisdom teeth?

A:

No, wisdom teeth are usually removed either by a general dentist or by an oral surgeon.
